Buying your Turkish Lira before you travel can be a good idea, as you’ll be able to pay for essentials like food, drink, taxis and service tips as soon as you land.
Picking up your currency beforehand means you won’t need to worry about having to find an ATM when you arrive so you can just get on with enjoying your holiday. You’ll also be able to avoid paying charges on any cash withdrawals.
It’s also worth remembering that foreign exchange rates can fluctuate. When you buy your Turkish Lira in advance, you can be sure of the rate you are going to get. If you withdraw cash when you arrive in Turkey, you may not get the same exchange rate.

The Turkish Lira is the national currency of the Republic of Turkey and can be used everywhere in the country. It replaced the Ottoman Lira in the early twentieth century, after the Turkish War of Independence. In 2005, the value of the Lira was reappraised to make its notes more manageable and in 2009, the current series of banknotes was introduced.
One Lira is the equivalent of 100 Kuruş, which are like British Pennies. The currency code for Turkish Lire is TRY. From October 2022, Turkish banks will no longer accept the old style £20 and £50 Sterling banknotes and exchange booths may not accept them either.
The Turkish Lira is only used in the Republic of Turkey and in Northern Cyprus, which is a de-facto state governed by Turkey in the Republic of Cyprus. In some of Turkey’s biggest tourist spots, you may find places that accept Euros, but the Lira is the country’s official currency.
If you have Lira leftover after your trip, you can exchange it for British Pounds when you return, for a small fee. We buy back all the currencies we sell in most banknote values.
The Turkish Lira is available in banknotes with the value of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Lira. You can also get 1 Lira coins. One Lira is made up of 100 Kuruş, which are available in 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 coins.
