The Japanese Yen is the official currency of Japan. Its international symbol is ¥ and 円 in Japan. Its abbreviation is JPY, and it’s issued by Bank Japan.
The Yen is a relatively new currency. It was introduced by the Meiji government in 1871 when it replaced the complex, copper-coin-based system of the Tokugawa era. Sen and Rin coins were also in circulation up until 1953, when they were removed.
Yen notes come in 1,000 yen, 2,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen.
Yen coins come in 1 yen, 5 yen, 10 yen, 50 yen, 100 yen and 500 yen.
The Japanese Yen is only used in Japan, where it’s the official currency. It’s the third-most traded currency in the foreign exchange market, behind the US Dollar and the Euro.
Tipping isn’t expected in Japan. In fact, it can be considered quite rude. In Japan, you can expect to receive good service as a point of pride and most people won’t accept a tip, unless they’re trying to avoid offending you.
In restaurants, you’ll often pay at a register rather than at your table and you won’t be expected to leave a tip. The same is true for other times where you might be used to tipping, like taxi rides or hotel services. If you receive a guided tour, you may consider a tip but always place it in an envelope and present the envelope with both hands on it and your head inclined.
