                    Buy before you fly

                    Benefits of planning ahead

It’s always smart to carry some of the local currency, so you can pay for necessities like transportation, gratuity tips – typically between 10% and 20% in Canada – and food and drink when you arrive.

Buying Canadian Dollars in advance also means you won’t need to waste time looking for an ATM or be charged for cash withdrawals – meaning you can get on with enjoying your holiday.

It’s also worth remembering exchange rates can fluctuate. When you buy your Canadian Dollars in advance, you know what rate you are going to get. If you decide to buy currency or withdraw cash when you arrive in Canada, the exchange rate may be different.

Get your currency when it’s convenient for you

You can use Click & Collect to arrange a time to pick up your Candian Dollars as part of your weekly shop, either from a Tesco Travel Money bureau or customer service desks. You can also use our home delivery service, which is free for online orders of £500 or more.

Exchange rates can change throughout the day and may vary depending on whether you buy in-store, online, or over the phone.

Some common questions about the Canadian Dollar

Canadian Dollars are the official currency of Canada and are issued by the Bank of Canada. The currency was made mandatory in 1871 and it’s abbreviated to CAD.

The symbol is $, which is the same as the US Dollar. Canadian Dollars can be subdivided into 100 Cents. Similar to the United States, Canada also uses quarters, dimes and nickels.

There are 5 different denominations of Canadian Dollar banknotes, including $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. The Royal Mint also issues $1 and $2 coins, as well as 5c (nickel), 10c (dime), 25c (quarter) and 50c coins.

Canada is the only country that officially uses the Canadian Dollar.

However, there are a few different places that unofficially accept them, including the self-governing territorial collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

Some American towns along the border with Canada may accept Canadian Dollars too. If so, they’ll generally give change in US Dollars but don’t always offer a favourable exchange rate.

The most popular name for a Canadian Dollar coin in Canada is a ‘Loonie’. The nickname refers to the picture of a loon (a type of bird) that’s displayed on the reverse side of the coin. Even though two-dollar coins have a polar bear on their reverse, they are often called ‘Toonies’. The names are so popular that the Royal Canadian Mint has trademarked them.

Canadian Dollars are also sometimes called ‘Bucks’. This is a slang term that started off in the 17th century, when the Hudson’s Bay Company issued a coin that was worth the same as a beaver’s pelt. Beavers were often called bucks and the name grew popular for both US and Canadian Dollars.
