                  Benefits of planning ahead

Because exchange rates can change every day, it makes sense to keep an eye on the Pound to Lev rate as part of your holiday planning so you can decide on the best time to buy.

You can also tick a big thing off your to-do list early by buying Lev online with Tesco Bank, and it means you can avoid potential ATM and withdrawal charges when in Bulgaria.

Get your currency when it’s convenient for you

You can use Click & Collect to arrange a time to pick up your Bulgarian Lev as part of your weekly shop, either from a Tesco Travel Money bureau or customer service desks. You can also use our home delivery service, which is free for online orders of £500 or more.

Exchange rates can change throughout the day and may vary depending on whether you buy in-store, online, or over the phone.

Some common questions about the Bulgarian Lev

The Bulgarian Lev is the official currency of Bulgaria. Lev means “lion”, the national symbol of Bulgaria.

The currency is often abbreviated to BGN. The plural of Lev is Leva, and each Lev can be divided into 100 Stotinki.

Banknotes are available in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. There are also coins, which come in 1 Lev or 2 Leva denominations.

Bulgaria is the only country to use the Bulgarian Lev. It’s not accepted as an official currency in any other countries or territories. Bulgaria is a member of the EU state and has plans to make the switch to the Euro in January 2024.

Bulgaria has a strong tipping culture and tips are expected throughout all areas of the tourist industry. Expect to leave a tip in hotels and restaurants, especially if service has been good. Tipping rates for meals or other services are typically between 10 and 15%. It’s unusual for a service charge to be added to a bill, but it’s still worth checking your receipt before tipping.

When staying in a hotel, you might want to leave between 2 and 5 Leva for housekeeping and it’s best practice to round up taxi bills to at least the nearest Lev.
