                Buy before you fly

                Planning ahead

It’s always handy to have some local currency before travelling. That way, you’ll be able to pay for things like food, drink, transportation and tips as soon as you arrive.

Buy your UAE Dirham before jetting off and you’ll be ready to hit the ground running, without the added stress of having to search for an ATM when you arrive.

It’s also worth remembering that exchange rates can fluctuate. When you buy your UAE Dirham in advance, you know where you stand with regards to rates. If you withdraw cash while you are away, you may not get the same exchange rate – and may be charged costly withdrawal fees.

Get your currency when it’s convenient for you

You can use Click & Collect to arrange a time to pick up your UAE Dirham as part of your weekly shop, either from a Tesco Travel Money bureau or customer service desks. You can also use our home delivery service, which is free for online orders of £500 or more.

Exchange rates can change throughout the day and may vary depending on whether you buy in-store, online, or over the phone.

The UAE Dirham is the official currency of the United Arab Emirates and has been in use since 1973. It’s issued by the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates. You’ll recognise it by the symbol Dh and its currency code is AED. The name is derived from the Greek name for currency, Drachma.

UAE Dirhams are available in both banknotes and coins. The notes range in size from 5 Dh to 1000 Dh and include 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 notes.

One UAE Dirham can be subdivided into 100 Fils and the smallest denomination is a 25 Fils coin. 50 Fils coins are also available. There are also 1 Dirham coins.

The seven different counties that make up the United Arab Emirates use the UAE Dirham as their official currency, including Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al Quwain. It’s not used anywhere else.

The UAE Dirham has been pegged to the US Dollar since 1997 and is considered among the most stable currencies in the world. It’s pegged at a fixed rate of 3.6725 UAE Dirham to 1 US Dollar.
