Some common questions about the Czech Koruna
The Czech Koruna is the official currency of the Czech Republic. You might also hear it called the Czech Crown. It is abbreviated to CZK and its symbol is Kč.
The Koruna has been the Czech Republic’s official currency ever since the country was first established in 1993, when it replaced the Czechoslovakian Koruna.
It comes in both banknotes and coins. Coins are available in 1 Kč, 2 Kč, 5 Kč, 10 Kč, 20 Kč and 50 Kč denominations and banknotes in 100 Kč, 200 Kč, 500 Kč, 1,000 Kč, 2,000 Kč, and 5,000 Kč.
The Czech Republic is the only country to officially use the Czech Koruna.
While the Czech Republic is a member of the European Union, it hasn’t yet committed to switching to the Euro. The change had been planned for 2010, but the Czech government put it on hold in 2005 and for the time being, there are no official plans to make the switch.
If you’re travelling to the Czech Republic, it’s safe to assume you will need Czech Koruna to spend while you’re there. In some tourist hotspots, such as Prague, you may find shops and restaurants that accept Euros but the exchange rate may not be favourable.
