How we protect you

The security of your account is a priority for Tesco Bank.

We feel that the best way to keep you secure without impacting your ability to use your account is by using a multi-layered approach that uses tools and techniques that targets individual fraud issues.

We would like to tell you about some of the things we have in place to protect you and your money:

Fraud Prevention & Detection Measures

Credit Card Email and SMS alerts

Email

We may sometimes email you to tell you about the following:

  • Features about your account that are either new, you have yet to use or have changed
  • Reminders that your statement is available to view online or that you have a payment due
  • Notifications that you have changed some of your personal or security details with us. This is a particularly important fraud prevention measure. If you are notified of a change you didn’t make, contact our fraud team

SMS

  • You can set up your account to receive SMS text message alerts from us. They will always include the Text Message Password that you chose during set up and the last four digits of your Credit Card number
  • We may also sometimes send an SMS text message requesting that you call us. If you are unsure of the source of these messages you can always call the number on your statement or the back of your card.

TrustDefender - We provide free malware and phishing protection software

Tesco Bank has teamed up with TrustDefender to bring you their latest security software, specifically designed to provide an additional layer of security for your Tesco Bank Online Banking.

TrustDefender is available now for all Tesco Bank Savings, Loan and Credit Card accounts. What's more, it's easy to use and completely free to download.

TrustDefender is different to anti-virus software in the following ways:

  • Isolates your Online Banking session from unidentified applications and secures your connection to Tesco Bank.
  • Identifies and alerts you to a wide range of security risks on your computer and shows you how you can resolve them.
  • Guards against phishing - The TrustDefender notification bar is displayed whenever you access Online Banking, so you can be sure you're on the real Tesco Bank Online Banking website.

TrustDefender will work alongside your existing anti-virus and will not impact the performance of your computer.

Please visit our TrustDefender page for more information, including how to download it and FAQs.

Enhanced Online Banking Security

We use the latest technology to manage your Online Banking experience. Not only does this reduce the risk of fraud but it also makes Online Banking easier. Here are some of the features of our new Online Banking security:

2 factor authentication security

We use a 2 factor authentication security when you register and log in to your Tesco Bank Credit Card, Savings and Loans Online Banking. We do this to ensure that we can always verify:

  • 'Something You Have' – your mobile phone or your computer, and
  • 'Something You Know' – your login or account details

This prevents fraudsters from using stolen security details to access your account online.

Registering for Online Banking

You can register for Online Banking if you have a Savings, Loan or Credit Card account.

If you don’t register as part of the application we’ll need to send you a Temporary Security Number so you can complete your registration.

This means we can be confident its you who is registering with your account details.

Logging in to Online Banking

When you register for Online Banking or change your password, we ask you if you would like us to recognise your computer. To do this we store a small security token on your computer. It doesn’t hold any private or personal information about you or your account; it simply allows us to recognise your computer when you login to Tesco Bank Online Banking. Recognising your computer is a security measure as it helps us make sure it’s you logging in.

You can ask us to recognise as many computers as you like. Because we use it as a security measure, you shouldn’t ask us to recognise a public computer, for example a computer in an internet café or a library.

If we don’t recognise the computer you’re using, we ask you to enter a One Time Access Code, which we’ll send by text message to your mobile. This helps stop fraudsters logging in to your account because they either have to be using a computer you’ve asked us to recognise, or have your mobile phone as well as knowing your Online Banking security details.

We’ll also use a One Time Access Code if you reset your Online Banking Security Number or Password.

Your Online Banking image and phrase

When you register for Online Banking or upgrade your existing security details, you'll be asked to choose an image and phrase that you’ll recognise. Your chosen image and phrase will be displayed every time you log in, so you'll know you're on the real Tesco Bank website. This is to help protect you against phishing. When you log in, if your image and phrase is not displayed, you should not enter your security details and you should contact us straight away.

HTTPS

All our servicing and application processes are protected through a secure connection. You can tell whether you are using a secure connection as your browser will show either icons in the address bar or padlock symbols on the bottom bar of the browser window.

Anti-phishing strategy

Although we have a range of anti-fraud systems and tools to help prevent and detect fraud that stems from phishing emails we also work to close down phishing websites as soon as we detect or are notified of them.

This not only reduces the risk of phishing but also protects unsuspecting recipients of phishing emails from being targeted by any malware that is attached to links in the phishing message.

Your help is vital in this process so if you think that you've received a phishing email please forward it to us.

Tesco Bank Secure

Tesco Bank Secure provides an extra layer of security when making credit card purchases online.

Provided in association with 'Verified by Visa' and 'MasterCard® SecureCode™', it is part of the 3D Secure standard and helps protect your card against unauthorised use when you purchase from participating retailers.

How it works

When you use your credit card online at a participating retailer, a 'receipt' will appear at the end of the purchase process, displaying details of your purchase as well as your Login name and Personal Message. Check that the information is displayed before you enter the requested 3 characters from your password to complete the purchase. Your request will be processed immediately.

If you don't see your Personal Message or Login Name, don't enter any of your password information and contact us straightaway on 0845 671 0679. Remember, we will never ask for your full password online.
