Registering for Online Banking

To use Online Banking you need to register first. The guide below takes you through the registration process.

To register, you'll need one of the following numbers:

  • Account number and sort code
  • Credit card number – this is the large 16-digit number across the front of your credit card

Select Register now on either the homepage or the Online Banking area in the top right corner of any page.

You can choose to enter your 16-digit card number or account number and sort code from your current account, credit card, savings or loan account.

Temporary security number is a code we use as a security measure to confirm your identity. You can choose to get this via text message or by post.

  • If you choose text message, and you've already provided your mobile phone number, you'll get your Temporary security number straight away.
  • If you choose post, or we don't have your mobile number, we'll send the Temporary security number by first class post and you won't be able to complete registration until you have it. You should receive it within 3-6 working days.

Your Temporary security number is valid for 30 days. If it expires you can request a new one online.

Enter a username, which you'll need every time you log in to Online Banking. To help you remember your username, we will default it to your email address. You can create an alternative username which must be at least six characters long, can be letters, numbers or a mix of both and is not case sensitive

As an additional security feature, you must choose an image and enter a security phrase that will then be shown every time you log in to Online Banking, so you'll know that you're on the real Tesco Bank website.

Your security phrase must be between 1 and 128 characters long and can have spaces. It can be a mix of letter and numbers which can include symbols such as, !" ( ) -_ [ ] { } ' , . ; : ? \ /.

Allow Tesco Bank to recognise your computer

For security, every time you log in we check to see if we recognise the computer or mobile device you are using. This helps us identify that it's really you logging in.

You can choose whether or not we recognise your computer or mobile device.

If you allow us to recognise your computer or mobile device, we store a small security token on your device. The token doesn't store any private or personal information about you or your accounts.

If we don't recognise your computer or mobile device when you log in, we'll send you a One Time Access Code via text message to confirm it's you logging in.

If your mobile phone number is incorrect, you can update it by inserting the correct number in the Mobile phone number box provided.

Create your other security details

You'll need to enter two digits from your security number every time you log in to Online Banking. You will also need to do this if you call us.

You’ll need to create a new six digit security number which can’t be your date of birth or a simple pattern, for example 123456, 654321, 112233. We'll never ask you to enter or confirm all six-digits of your security number.

Choose a password, that is at least seven characters with a mix of letters and numbers. It’s case sensitive and can’t be the same as your username.

Choose three security questions

These are only needed if you call us. They help us make sure it's really you. Choose three different questions from the drop-down menus and enter an answer for each. Your answers must be at least four characters long.

Before you finish, you'll need to read and accept the Online Banking terms and conditions. You can download these in PDF format.

Your registration is complete, you can now continue to Online Banking.

So, you've signed up for a current account, credit card, savings or a loan with Tesco Bank and you want to get going with online banking. Well, let's show you how.

Registration is easy, so if you haven't done so yet, please go to and complete the process first.

Simply click 'Register now'.

We will ask for your personal details. This is so we can identify you. Next, choose the account you'd like to register. All the options are in the drop-down menu. Then, fill in your sort code and account number or your credit card number. Easy!

Next, we'll send you a temporary security number. If we have your mobile number you'll receive this by SMS, if not we'll send it by post.

Simply click on the preferred option. If you have chosen post you will need to wait up to 3-6 working days before you receive your Temporary Security Number. Then you will be able to continue with your registration journey.

If you have chosen mobile phone, your Temporary Security Number will be sent to you immediately. If you didn't receive a Temporary Security Number, you can ask us to send you a new one on the same page.

Once you have it, enter the number and click 'Next'.

Now, create a username. You'll need this each time you log in so make sure it is something you can remember; for example, your email address.

Now you're ready to select an image and write your security phrase. You'll see these each time you log in, and this way you'll know you're on the real Tesco Bank site.

Just because we want to make it easier for you, we will ask you if you'd like us to recognise the device you're using. Make sure that your mobile number is correct so that we can send you a text message with a One Time Access Code if you ever want to log in from a device we don’t recognise. Click 'yes' or 'no' and proceed further.

At this step we'll ask you to create a six-digit Security Number. You'll use this for Telephone Banking too.

Then, choose a password that's at least seven characters long. It needs to have both letters and numbers.

You'll need your Security Number and Password every time you log in.

Finally, set some security questions in case you need to phone us about your accounts.

Before you finish, download and read our Online Banking Terms and Conditions and if you're happy, select the check box.

Your username will be displayed on the screen. In order to start managing your account, simply click 'Continue'.

And there we are - the easy way to register, get up and running and enjoy all the benefits of Tesco Online Banking.
