                  Benefits of planning ahead

With so many things to think about, getting ready for a holiday can be a bit of a juggling act. But by ordering your Pesos online before you travel, you can tick one big thing off your list.

Exchange rates can change so waiting until the last minute can limit your choice and arriving with some local cash means no searching for ATMs or banks.

Get your currency when it’s convenient for you

You can use Click & Collect to arrange a time to pick up your Mexican Pesos as part of your weekly shop, either from a Tesco Travel Money bureau or customer service desks. You can also use our home delivery service, which is free for online orders of £500 or more.

Exchange rates can change throughout the day and may vary depending on whether you buy in-store, online, or over the phone.

Some common questions about the Mexican Peso

Mexican Pesos are the official currency of Mexico, you’ll often see them abbreviated to MXN. The Peso was the first currency to make use of the $ sign and to differentiate Pesos from US Dollars, you may also see them referred to as MX$ or $MN.

Each Peso is made up of 100 Centavos (¢) and the banknotes start at a relative highly denomination, with a $20 bill being the smallest and $1,000 the largest. $50, $100, $200 and $500 notes are also available. Coins range from 5¢, 10¢, 20¢ and 50¢ to $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.

$20 and $50 banknotes are printed in polymer while the rest of notes are printed on cotton paper.

Only Mexico recognises Mexican Pesos as an official currency. Some towns on the border of Mexico and Southern US will accept Pesos, but there’s no guarantee. You may also be able to spend US Dollars in Mexico.

Mexico’s currency was based on Spanish currency, which was called Reale. The name Peso comes from the silver 8-reale coins issued by Spain in Mexico, which were also nicknamed ‘pieces of eight’ in the UK. Mexico kept the name when it gained independence from Spain in 1821.

The influence of the Spanish empire means that there are quite a few countries that use Pesos as the name for their currencies, including Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Philippines and Uruguay.
