                    Buy before you fly

                    Benefits of planning ahead

Buying Australian Dollars before you fly lets you pay for essentials like taxis, food and drink, without having to withdraw from an ATM or bank. That way you can avoid additional withdrawal charges and avoid the stress of having to find a cash machine when you arrive. It also makes tipping easier when you have cash handy.

It’s also worth remembering that foreign exchange rates fluctuate. When you buy Australian Dollars in advance, you can be sure of the rate you are going to get. If you withdraw cash from an ATM while you’re in Australia, you might find you don’t get the same exchange rate.

Get your currency when it’s convenient for you

You can use Click & Collect to arrange a time to pick up your Australian Dollars as part of your weekly shop, either from a Tesco Travel Money bureau or customer service desks. You can also use our home delivery service, which is free for online orders of £500 or more.

Exchange rates can change throughout the day and may vary depending on whether you buy in-store, online, or over the phone.

Some common questions about the Australian Dollar

The Australian Dollar is the official currency of Australia and is issued by the Reserve Bank of Australia. It is abbreviated to AUD and its symbol is A$, which makes it easy to tell the difference between Australian and USA Dollars.

One Australian Dollar is made up of 100 cents. Silver coins come in 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces, and there are also $1 and $2 coins which are commonly referred to as ‘gold coins’. Notes come in 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 denominations, and are each a distinctive colour.

As Australia’s official currency, the Australian Dollar is used throughout the Commonwealth of Australia, which includes Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Heard Islands and McDonald Islands. It’s also used and accepted in the Pacific Island states of Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu.

The ‘tail’ side of Australian coins each highlight native Australian fauna, including an echidna, an emu, a lyrebird, a platypus and a kangaroo. The $2 coin has a print of an Aboriginal elder on it.

Known for their distinctive colour depending on the denomination, each banknote features a different type of Australian wattle and a native bird, and portraits of renowned Australian figures.

The pink $5 note is slightly different with its picture of Queen Elizabeth II and New Parliament House.

Australian Dollar banknotes are made of polymer, a type of plastic with a distinctive, waxy feel. Polymer was introduced as a way to discourage counterfeits. It is also hardier than paper alternatives, with Polymer banknotes lasting roughly two to three times as long as paper ones. Australia was the first country to introduce polymer banknotes, back in 1988.
