Luggage restrictions when travelling by air

As travelling abroad by air gets easier, the safety regulations get stricter.

We all need to do our bit to make sure that we travel safely and a bit of forward planning can reduce the inconvenience and waiting time at airports and make sure we all travel safer.

Things to remember

  • Each passenger is restricted to carrying only one item of cabin baggage through the airport search point with a maximum size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried inside the single item of cabin baggage.
  • Where possible, put all liquid items in your hold baggage. This includes water and other drinks, creams, sprays, pastes and gels - even your lip gloss!
  • Liquids, gels and aerosols which you wish to take on board with you are only allowed in individual containers of 100ml. All containers must fit comfortably in one, transparent, re-sealable bag no larger than 20cm x 20cm. You may be asked to pull this out of your bag when going through security.
