How to travel long distances with children

As a child you might remember driving for hours to get to your holiday destination, but times have changed and flying to all sorts of remote holiday destinations is more popular than ever.

It can be very tedious for your children to travel very long distances in a plane, so here is some advice to make the journey a happier affair for everyone.

Some tips for happier travelling...

  • Make sure to carry the proper identification with you. Airlines will not check in babies and young children without passports for international flights.
  • If you are travelling with a baby, double check that you have all the nappies, food and lotions that you will need readily available on board the plane.
  • Some countries will confiscate fresh produce like milk and fruit so bring alternatives.
  • Take a pacifier or bottle for young children to suck on to alleviate ear pain from the change in cabin pressure.
  • Try to follow your child's routine with nap times.
  • Take plenty of toys and books to keep the children occupied.

A bit of forward planning will ease the stress of travelling with small children. Talk to your children about the trip before it happens. Let them know what to expect and make an adventure of it.
