What to look for when getting a new pet

Here are some tips if you want to add a little animal magic to your life.

Cat or dog?

In the UK, cats are more popular because they need less upkeep than dogs. Dogs sleep for about four hours during the day and can need a lot of stimulation and exercise between naps. A cat, therefore, could be better if you’re often out of the house.

Short back and sides or long locks? You also need to think about grooming and the length of the cat or dog’s hair. What about exercise? A greyhound will need to run off much more steam than a short-legged terrier!

Where to buy a pet?

From an advertisement

Buying a pet from a newspaper or web advert can be an excellent way to find one, wanting a loving home and family. But take your time and make sure that you do plenty of research. Meet the pet and owners, and look out for the correct documentation.

Pet shops

Always shop around before buying your furry friend from a pet shop. There are many reputable pet shops– but beware of places that neglect animals. A decent pet shop should have good housing and proper care for its animals, never overcrowded conditions. Staff must answer your queries, or at least give you advice about where to find information.

Sanctuaries

Rescue home pets need tender loving care. Not all come from broken homes – some are handed over because their owners can’t afford their upkeep or have simply moved home. Rescued pets such as cats and dogs can be acquired from a reputable sanctuary usually for a small donation, and should have been looked after by a vet.

Could you give an animal a good home? If so, there are thousands of needy pets in RSPCA and SSPCA animal centres. For details of your nearest centre in England and Wales call the RSPCA enquiry line on 0300 1234 555, in Scotland the SSPCA enquiry line on 03000 999999, or in Northern Ireland the Ulster SPCA on 028 3025 1000.

Pet insurance

Consider pet insurance: Alongside cover for injuries or illnesses, it can include many extras to look after your furry friends.
