Get fit and have fun

Maintaining a certain level of fitness is vital to your health and exercising regularly has many benefits.

But many people are resistant to the idea of exercise because they think of it as hard work.

And although exercise can be hard sometimes, it should also be invigorating, challenging and fun.

Exercise can be fun

If you watch children at play, you'll see that they are usually so engrossed in their game or too busy riding their bike to realise that they are also getting a good work out.

Think about how children exercise, think about how you used to exercise as a child, and try to bring some of that fun back into your life.

Exercise doesn't have to mean going to gym. Consider these:

  • bicycling
  • ice-skating
  • in-line skating
  • football
  • swimming
  • tennis
  • walking
  • jogging
  • running
  • basketball

Team sports especially can be very social if you want them to be, mixing with your team mates after a game is also a great way to foster a community spirit. Look for clubs that are active in your area and find out how you can get involved.

Cycling or walking with a friend or partner, when weather permits, is also an effective way to get a good workout without realising it. Exploring a new town by foot or on a bicycle is the best way to experience the area; you often miss out on detail if you are in a car.

Some adventurous souls go on cycling holidays; Europe is famous for its convenient cycling tracks.

If you don't want to socialise through exercise, running or jogging is a great workout, and it can help take your mind off the stresses of the day.

The important thing is to do something that you enjoy, you're more likely to stick to it then and the benefits will go far beyond increasing your level of fitness.
