Hints & Tips
Choosing a dentist that's right for you
Here, you will find the answers to some commonly asked oral health-related questions.
Invest in your teeth - they have to last you the rest of your life. It may not seem like an issue when you're in your 20s, 30s or 40s, but if you don't maintain your teeth you'll pay for it later. And who has money to spend on dental issues in their retirement?
Arm yourself with the right information. The British Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, regular flossing and a check-up with a registered professional every six months.
Finding a dentist
Find a good dentist by asking family and friends for a referral first, or if you want to find a dentist on the NHS, contact the NHS for information. Each one of these websites listed below has a search facility that allows you to enter your postcode and search for a dentist.
- England www.nhs.uk
- Wales www.wales.nhs.uk
- Northern Ireland www.hscbusiness.hscni.net
- Scotland www.show.scot.nhs.uk
Some treatments are only available privately, like tooth whitening or dental implants, but otherwise most dental treatments can be carried out by a dentist on the NHS and the prices are set by the government.
You may also benefit from free dental treatment if you fall into one of these categories:
- under 18
- aged 18 in full-time education
- if the patient or their partner receives income support
- if the patient or their partner receives pensions credit-guarantee credit
- if the patient or their partner receives income based job seekers allowance
- if the patient is entitled to or named on a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
- if the patient is named on an NHS low income scheme HC2 certificate
- if the patient is pregnant or has had a baby in the last 12 months (source: www.nhs.uk).
