Satellite navigation - Is it worth it?

Satellite Navigation paves the way for you to travel the shortest route possible. Say goodbye to struggling with finding your location on a map on the side of the road.

Basic or with all the trimmings?

Generally, you get what you pay for with Sat Nav units. Higher spec equals higher cost. They can range from sophisticated pieces of kit with lane guidance, Bluetooth, DVD player, voice instruction or even an MP3 player. You might just want one telling you where to go!

Globe trotter or home turf?

Ensure the map coverage meets your travel needs. You can easily extend the unit's catchment area if you plan to travel further-afield such as Western or Eastern Europe.

Portable or fixed?

Like most fully-installed devices, Sat Nav systems are more costly than portable units. Portable units can be carried around and used in any vehicle, even hire cars abroad. Permanent systems are often more advanced, and less vulnerable to theft and loss. Voice directions can also co-ordinate with and override the sound of in-car stereos.

Points of interest (POIs)

Some Sat Nav units can be supplied with different POI packages which are specifically adapted to suit your needs. Do you want to know more than just your route? How about service stations, car parking or places of interest?

Receive traffic reports

There's nothing worse than being stuck in a long tailback. This is where Sat Navs come into their own by giving live traffic alerts. Services are available through monthly subscription, but some brands offer free live updates with their more upmarket models.

Save fuel

Accurate Sat Nav units are able to save fuel by guiding you to your destination with greater precision that navigating yourself. They're also very handy for pinpointing exactly where you are in the event of a breakdown or accident.
