Performance car maintenance

If you own a performance car you will know that repairs and services can be on the pricey side but as every home mechanic knows a bit of general maintenance can help avoid mechanical problems before they arise.

By performing regular checks on vital components and parts you can help avoid unnecessary breakdowns. Running through this checklist once a week won't take more than 20 minutes and it could save you a load of time and money in the long run.

Checklist

  • Read the owner's manual and know exactly which fluids your car needs.
  • Check all of your lights are working including head lights, brake lights, indicators and reverse lights.
  • Check your tyres (including the spare) for visible cracks or cuts, tyre pressure and tread depth.
  • Get under the bonnet and check all your belts and hoses for cracks, tears or leaks. Replace damaged parts soon as possible.
  • Check your oil level when your car is stationary and the engine is cold. Consult the manual for the optimum oil to use.
  • Scan the ground underneath your car for any traces of fluid leaks.
  • Check your battery by lifting both covers and make sure that you have enough distilled water in the battery.
  • Check your brake fluid level and fill up as required.
  • Check the power steering and transmission fluid and ensure the fluid levels are correct. Do not overfill.

Take care not to move or alter other parts in the engine. Unless you are a professional then take your car to a qualified technician for advice on further checks and maintenance. As the owner of a performance car you should have a specialist looking after your car.

If you are not sure about any of the checks mentioned above, have a qualified technician inspect your car. They will be able to offer you advice on further checks and any additional maintenance tips.
