Advice for non-British drivers to get car insurance

If you have a foreign driver's license and need to insure your car in the UK then the process of getting car insurance will differ slightly from those who have a UK driver's licence.

Some insurance companies will provide you with car insurance on a foreign driver's license but they may require that you are a UK resident. Shop around to get the best deal and make sure your car make and model is covered by the policy. This is especially important if you are driving a car that is not made in the UK.

If you acquire a British driver's license the process is similar to that of British born drivers. In some instances your premiums will be higher as it is not possible to carry over your driving history from your old driver's license and you may be considered a "new" driver. There are a number of things you can do to bring down your premiums including taking certified Advanced Driving courses.

Once you have bought your insurance you must register your car in your name and current address with the DVLA and if it is older than three years old it also has to pass an MOT test.
