Using Online Banking for current accounts

It’s easy to manage your current account with Online Banking. Find out how to get started.

An introduction to managing your account

So, you'd like to know more about managing your Tesco Bank accounts online? If you haven't done so already, first check out our other videos that show how to register and log in.

From the Online Banking Overview screen choose the account you'd like to manage.

If you have a new current account, the first thing you need to do is activate your card. You need to enter the last four digits of your long debit card number to do this.

At the Account Overview screen, click on the name of the account. You can see a list of your recent transactions and manage your account by moving your money or applying for an overdraft. It's all available on the left of your screen.

If you need to apply for or manage your overdraft you can do this from this page. If you don't have one already you can simply click 'Apply For An Overdraft' and tell us the limit you'd like. Or if you already have an overdraft with us, you can request to reduce or increase the amount. We'll give you a decision and update your account straight away.

Switching other accounts to Tesco Bank is a simple process - just click 'Switch an Account'.

For the next part, it's a good idea to have an old bank statement handy, as well as the account's debit card, if it has one. There are two options here.


Choose the Current Account Switch Service and we'll transfer your payment arrangements and close your old account. Once your debit card is up and running, the switch takes just seven working days.


Choose our Payment Transfer Service. This won't close your old account. We'll only switch your bill payments, standing orders and Direct Debits. All you have to do is enter your old account number and sort code. Switching a joint account? Then we'll ask for your partner's debit card details as well. If you've got a debit card, enter that number too, along with the expiry date.

To proceed, click 'Continue'. There's some things you'll need to check and agree to on the next page before you move on. You'll then have a chance to check all your information.

Something not quite right? Just press 'Edit' to go back and change it.

Forgotten your PIN? No worries, just request a PIN Reminder, enter the last four digits on the front of your card and we'll send you a PIN by post.

Your Document Store is a very handy place; from statements to letters, most of your important documents can be found here. From the drop-down lists, simply choose the account you'd like to view and select one of the options.

Even better, you can also search within a range of dates. Click 'Filter' and you'll see a list of the documents you've selected.

Your Alerts help you keep track of your accounts. For alerts to work, we need your mobile number and/or your email address. Check to make sure we've got the right details.

There are two types of alert. Balance Alerts are for Savings and Current Accounts.

Balance alerts let you choose an upper and/or lower balance. We'll send an alert when your account hits one of those limits. Paid and Unpaid Transaction Alerts are just for Current Accounts. We'll send these to warn you if you don't have enough money in your account to cover a payment.

You can choose to receive alerts by SMS or email, depending on your preferences.

We'll try to send you an alert on the morning a payment is due. You'll then have until 5pm that day to put money into your account and cover the amount due.

Online Banking Overview

When you login, you will see the Online Banking Overview page which will show all of your Tesco Bank accounts.

Click on the Manage Account button in the Current Account area which will take you to the Account Overview page. Using the navigation on the right-hand side of the page, you can then:

  • Set up a payment or transfer
  • View your account details
  • Manage alerts
  • Request an overdraft
  • Switch from another bank account

Manage your details and documents

Your Account Overview lets you view all your savings, loan and current accounts in one place and make some changes to all these accounts at the same time, such as:

  • Change your address, email and contact phone numbers
  • Update your Clubcard number
  • View all your statements and other account documents
  • Choose the format of your account documentation

Payments and transactions

This video will take you through a detailed view of managing your Payments and Transactions for Tesco Bank online accounts. If you haven't done so already, first check out our other videos that show how to register and log in.

From the Online Banking Overview screen, choose the account you'd like to manage. If you have a new current account, the first thing you need to do is activate your card.

Move Money Out lets you pay people or bills in the UK and abroad. If you've moved money to someone before, it's easy to do it again: just select their name from the drop-down list and follow the steps.

The New Payee option lets you move money to someone new. You'll need to know their name, sort code and account number. You can also add a reference so both of you know what the payment is for.

You can set up regular or one-off payments and choose a date in the future or make an immediate payment.

If it's a regular payment you can choose a start date and how often you'd like the payment to be made.

For international payments the steps are similar. Although this process isn't quite as simple as moving money inside the UK, there are other pieces of information required.

You will need the following: Name, Address, SWIFT number (also known as the Bank Identifier Code), and the International Bank Account Number. The person you're making the payment to should be able to provide these.

If you like, you can add a reference - so both of you know what the payment is for - and we'll show the currency for the country you've selected. We'll also show you the fee we charge for this payment.

Manage Payments gives you an overview of all your payments. For current accounts that means One-off Payments, Standing Orders and Direct Debits. For savings, you can view money into and out of your account.

You can also amend or delete Standing Orders and one-off Payments. Just click on the links next to each one.

With Manage Payees or Manage Accounts & Payees, you can find out who you've moved money to in the past. Just click 'Manage Payees' for Current Accounts and 'Manage Accounts & Payees' for Savings Accounts. This list includes all your Payees.

You can move money to any of these Payees straight from this page. Just click the 'Move Money' link.

With 'Search Transactions' from the Your Transactions menu you can find the exact transactions you want, such as latest salary payment or a bill. Just choose the date range you want to search and add more details like transaction type, a range of amounts, or use keywords like 'Council Tax'.

Clicking 'Download Your Transactions' lets you download up to 12 months of transactions at a time. Click 'Download Your Transactions' from the menu on the left, then choose the dates you're interested in, and the format you'd prefer.

Managing your alerts

To set upper and/or lower balance alerts log in to Online Banking and select Manage account from the Online Banking Overview.

Select Manage alerts from the Your alerts section on the Account Overview. Ensure your contact details are up to date and, if you have more than one account, choose the account you want to update from the drop-down menu, then Manage alerts.

Choose how you want to receive alerts (either by email or SMS) and set the balance limits you want in whole pounds, for example 100 or 1000, then choose Continue.

Requesting an overdraft in Online Banking

A Tesco Bank overdraft gives you access to a little extra cash when you need it. You can apply when you open your current account, or later in Online Banking if you prefer. Either way, we'll give you a decision straight away.

Log in to Online Banking and select Manage account from the Online Banking Overview. Select Apply for an overdraft from Your account preferences and enter the overdraft amount you'd like to apply for, then choose Submit.

We'll let you know the amount of the arranged overdraft we'll offer you. (Please note that this may be less than the amount you applied for).

If you want to accept the overdraft offer, read and confirm you've read the important information, then choose Submit.

You have the flexibility to change your overdraft limit. To change your overdraft limit, select Your account preferences within Manage arranged overdraft. Enter the new overdraft amount you want to change to, then choose Submit.

Our online switching service

The Current Account Switch Service makes it simple to move from your existing bank. You can request a switch using Online Banking once your debit card is activated, and it takes just seven days - guaranteed.

To switch after your account is open, log in to Online Banking and select Manage account on the Online Banking Overview. Select current account, or the account nickname, above the account number and sort code on the Account Overview. Select Switch an account from Your account preferences.

Enter the details for your old current account, then Continue.

Read both the Current Account Switch Agreement and the Account closure terms and conditions, check the boxes to confirm you agree to these and then choose Continue.

Check and Confirm the switch details are correct.
