Taking inspiration from some of the Galleries' existing collections, the children based their art on a number of themes including 'How Does Your Garden Grow?' and 'Heroes and Heroines'.

Louise Barrie from Kemnay Primary School in Aberdeenshire, talked about seeing her art on display: "My category was 'Heroes and Heroines', so I drew a picture of my granddad. I feel really proud to be here today and show my mum the picture hanging on the wall in the Gallery."

In the first year that Tesco Bank has been involved in this competition, a record 6,200 entries were received from schools in 31 different authorities across Scotland - a 5.3% increase on last year. Children from nursery age up to S2 were eligible to enter the competition.

Benny Higgins, Tesco Bank Chief Executive, commented: "It is great that in supporting The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools that we've seen more than a 5% increase in entries. The artwork which is now on display in the National Portrait Gallery shows the amazing talent the children of Scotland have. Our aim is to continue to widen accessibility of this very special competition over the forthcoming years of our partnership."
